TV Review: The Engrossing, Surprising Southland Returns

Watching TNT’s cop series Southland (Tuesday 10 pm/9 c) puts knots in my stomach, and I mean that as praise. It’s the most engrossing cop series since season one of NBC’s Homicide, and maybe the most raggedy and real. Chaos erupts out of nowhere, zooming in from off-screen, and then escalates into horror or takes a right turn into absurdity. There are several moments in the premiere that illustrate what I’m talking about.

Twisted Metal Runs on Empty

If Anthony Mackie were less good as John Doe, Twisted Metal would be excruciating. There’s a character in Twisted Metal called Sweet Tooth. He is brawny and wide, with tight pants and a leather harness on his shoulders and a gruesome grinning clown mask on his face. His mind exists somewhere outside of reality, only occasionally connecting the dots between his inner fantasies and the rest of the world.

Tyler, the Creator Joined by a Dozen Tylers, the Creator for Grammys Performance

What’s the plural of Tyler, the Creator? We’re going with Tylers, the Creator, after watching the dozen or so Tyler clones — also in stylish pink suits and blond wigs — show up during the Grammy-nominated IGOR rapper’s performance. The seeming reference to Eminem’s 2000 VMAs performance, in which he stared down 100 Slim Shady clones, came after a trash-fire singing circle that also featured Charlie Wilson and Boyz II Men. As if that all wasn’t enough, Tyler’s “Earfquake” and “New Magic Wand” performance also featured some of his signature Igor dancing and ended with him falling back into a blaze of glory.

Our bet: It involves some form of cruelty. Ugly Betty Series Finale: Ready Steady Go

Ugly Betty Hello Goodbye Season 4 Episode 20 «Previous Next « PreviousEpisode Next Episode » After four seasons of struggles, breakups, murders, kidnappings, extortion attempts, and fashion emergencies, the cast of Ugly Betty damn well earned a happy ending — and that’s exactly what creator Silvio Horta gave them last night on the series finale. The show has been praised throughout its run for its exploration of gay, immigration, and class issues through a Latino lens, but the last episode got a bit more granular.

Ugly Bettys Mark Indelicato on Justins First Kiss

Mark Indelicato has spent almost a third of his life playing Justin Suarez on Ugly Betty. “Our last day of shooting was yesterday and I cried for about seven hours straight,” the 15-year-old told us at the canceled sitcom’s wrap party last night. “That’s one of the hardest things that I think I’m going to have to deal with is letting go of a character that has been a part of me, and will always be a part of me, but not getting to bring him out every day.

Urgent: How Do I Get Ryan Goslings Ken-Branded Underwear?

Hiya, dollface. Greta Gerwig knows how to celebrate Pride Month. Warner Bros. has released a new photo of Ryan Gosling as Ken in Gerwig’s upcoming Barbie movie and there is a lot going on in the photo: bleached-blond hair, very tan abs, and a remarkable resemblance to the gay Ken doll, Earring Magic Ken, that Mattel released without realizing his necklace looked like a sex toy. Gosling stars in the film alongside Margot Robbie, and though we’re super-excited for the movie, we must note that it’s taking two professional actors to do what Silky Nutmeg Ganache did all on her own.

USAs Covert Affairs Is the Second Coming of Alias

Covert Affairs, a new spy show premiering tonight on USA — where it fits right in with Burn Notice and White Collar, the network’s other slick, banter-filled espionage shows — is getting good reviews. Sure, there’s a bit of the backhanded, “It’s fun for summer” vibe to the assessments, but, still, the consensus is: It’s fun for summer! The other consensus: It is a whole lot like Alias, the J.
