The Boxtrolls is being released in 3-D, and I wish it were in Smell-o-vision, too. Its ornate world of piled-up garbage and giant wheels of cheese and gross body horror would surely emit a wondrous stink. Adapted by the animation studio Laika (who gave us the terrifying coming-of-age tale Coraline and the horror spoof ParaNorman) from Alan Snow’s novel Here Be Monsters!, this is a film firmly rooted in the dark side of a child’s imagination — the side that compulsively wonders what might happen if you smelled this or broke that, that occasionally threatens to experiment on the family pet.

Uma Thurman’s accent. Truvada product placement. The tonal equivalent of a Disney Channel original gay porn. Make it all make sense. Rachel Handler: Jackson, hello. I’m sorry that it has come to this, both of us in a Google doc typing on a beautiful summer day. But it’s time to talk about the bisexual elephant (non-Republican-affiliated) in the room: the long-awaited Prime Video movie adaptation of Red, White, & Royal Blue.
Excerpt from Zonzo. Intentional poor taste is not a concept unique to comics, but comics have a unique ability to convey it in a way that makes you gasp. As cartoonist and theorist Art Spiegelman is fond of saying, the comics medium is built on a simplicity that can slip through your mental defenses and pierce your brain. We look at the textures and details of Goya’s Saturn Devouring His Son and nod our heads about its ghastliness, but we retch when we look at the cartoony dismemberment of guro manga (link NSFW, and the fact that I didn’t need to say that about the Goya tells you all you need to know).

Chloe Wise is so hot right now. Lit-er-al-ly, she would say, in that accent that has somehow transcended its Southern California roots to become the voice of an entire socioeconomic class. “I want to, like, dip myself into a pool of water,” she said, lifting her glossy dark hair off her neck. It was a blazing-hot Saturday in September, and Wise, 26, was standing next to an anemic tree in Seward Park on the Lower East Side, wearing a T-shirt and palazzo pants and dramatically waving a delicate wooden fan against her invisibly sweating skin.
