Neal Brennan Gave the Best Speech at Dave Chappelles Mark Twain Prize Ceremony

Neal Brennan. Several great speeches were delivered Sunday night during the Mark Twain Prize ceremony honoring Dave Chappelle held at the Kennedy Center. Longtime SNL cast member Kenan Thompson spoke from the heart about how much Chappelle’s comedy has influenced him: “Your fearlessness to entertain the way that you want to has definitely pierced my life, to the point where I played a werewolf choreographer last night.” Bradley Cooper said some sincere words about how Chappelle inspires him as a father: “My daughter’s [backstage], and I’m just so grateful, Dave, that I got to meet you before I had my daughter.

Need a Beloved Comedy Podcast Relaunched? Call Chelsea Peretti!

“Do you feel chronic existential dread but love talking about delicious snacks?” If this describes you (and I mean, who doesn’t this describe?) then Chelsea Peretti wants you to give her a call, because she’s bringing back her dearly departed comedy podcast, Call Chelsea Peretti. The original glorious run of the podcast, affectionately called CCP (unrelated to the Chinese Communist Party), published regular eps from 2012-2015 with occasional spurts of episodic brilliance from 2016-2020, with Peretti fielding phone calls from bewildered fans, droppin’ more sick sound effects than a hundred morning zoos, and expressing a love for Wolf Blitzer and deadly hate for common household bugs.

Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising Is Only Woke About the Need to Be Woke

“In the United States, sororities aren’t allowed to throw parties in their own houses. Only frats can … Google it,” sorority president Selena Gomez tells a room full of pledges at the beginning of Neighbors 2. It’s the kind of cringe-y line that instantly shows that this movie is going to talk about sexist double standards and, oh, probably hit you over the head with that theme. The film is trying to be “woke,” but it also carries much of the baggage associated with that word at this point in 2016.

Neil Patrick Harris on Hedwig, Dressing Rooms, and Getting All That Glitter Off Every Night

Neil Patrick Harris’s stage chops have been well known to the Broadway community for years — mostly for his Über-charming Tony-hosting duties (and a memorable supporting turn in the 2004 revival of Assassins) — but as of Tuesday night, he’s officially proven his ability to carry an entire show on his shoulders. Starring as the East German transgendered would-be punk rock star Hedwig in John Cameron Mitchell and Stephen Trask’s Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Harris prances around stage in platform heels, goes through a formidable collection of wigs, and shreds like Iggy for 90 minutes straight.

Neko Case Talks About Moby Dick, Depression, and Her New Tattoo

Neko Case’s powerful voice and elliptical songs — ranging from blaring power pop to haunting alt-country — have for nearly twenty years made her a singer apart: a goddess among boys in the New Pornographers, a mysterious lone frontierswoman of sorts on her solo records. All that mythology gets peeled away on her new album, The Worse Things Get, the Harder I Fight, the Harder I Fight, the More I Love You.

Netflix Orders The Midnight Gospel From Pendleton Ward and Duncan Trussell

Break out the ayahuasca, The Duncan Trussell Family Hour is coming to Netflix! According to Deadline, Netflix has ordered a series by Trussell and Adventure Time’s Pendleton Ward. The Midnight Gospel will be an adult animated series about a “spacecaster” named Clancy, “who leaves the comfort of his home to interview beings living in dying worlds.” The interviews will be comprised of snippets of Trussell’s podcast, The Duncan Trussell Family Hour.

Netflixs American Vandal Is an Immature True-Crime Parody Thats Almost Brilliant?

L-R: Lou Wilson and Jimmy Tatro in American Vandal. If Beavis and Butthead decided to make a show like Making a Murderer, it would probably look a lot like Netflix’s American Vandal. Actually, if Beavis and Butthead were involved, it might have fewer dick jokes. American Vandal, streaming as of today on Netflix, is a parody of true-crime series like the aforementioned Netflix docudrama, and therefore focuses on a “crime” of a less serious nature: an act of vandalism in which a student named Dylan Maxwell stands accused of spray-painting penises on 27 cars in the faculty parking lot of his high school.

Netflixs Marco Polo Is Opulent, Lifeless

The dialogue on Marco Polo is about 40 percent actual words and 60 percent grunts, heaves, groans, and moans. Unfortunately, once you actually hear the lines, it’s hard not to root for more uuuurggghhhs. Netflix’s new period drama wants so badly to be like Game of Thrones that it copies a lot of that show’s battle aesthetics and visual panache without seeming to notice the most important part: Game of Thrones is trying to say something.
