The cast of The Walking Dead is mostly made up of people that were, at one point or another, devoured. Such is the natural result of eleven years of zombie mayhem. But one character that lasted from the early days of the first season all the way to last November’s conclusion is Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus), the belligerent redneck with a crossbow that grew into the show’s most famous symbol of survival and, somehow, emotional connection.

That discussion rarely, if ever, involves progressive rock. It’s nearly impossible to imagine prog again attaining the massive success of its ’70s heyday. Back then prog rock, characterized by virtuosic instrumental passages, high-blown lyrics, and fantastical imagery, achieved truly popular success, as bands like Yes, King Crimson, and Jethro Tull sold millions.

“I can’t feel my face when I’m sued.” You’re not a music superstar until you’ve been taken to court over one of your hits. Congrats, the Weeknd: Your moment has arrived. On Wednesday, Cutting Edge Music sued the Grammy nominee for copyright infringement in his No. 1 song “The Hills,” alleging it uses an unauthorized sample from Tom Raybould’s score for the 2013 sci-film The Machine. And it appears the music publishing company may have a case: The lawsuit claims that the song’s co-producer Mano (whom you may remember as the DJ Kanye once fired) direct-messaged Raybould on Twitter back in March, telling him, “I sampled your music might make it 2 the weeknd next album.
Funny or “novelty” music is nothing new — Spike Jonze, Stan Freberg and Tom Lehrer were doing their funny musical shtick way back in the ’50s. The most famous funny musician of all-time, however, is undoubtedly “Weird Al” Yankovic, whose 30-year career has made him one of the most durable musicians of any kind, parodist or not. But Yankovic primarily covers Top 40 and mainstream rock, leaving the door wide open for acts in other genres to step up and be the “Weird Al” of their own particular style of music—or at least that’s their hope.
